Donation Refund via LoveGiving

This article covers how to process a donation refund where a donor has donated via LoveGiving, but you wish to subsequently to refund this. Whilst this isn't a common scenario, the guidance below should help you should this happen.

Refunding the Donor

To refund the donor, sign in to your stripe account, search for the donor, click on the payment, then click the refund button to issue a refund.

The Stripe Helpguide contains more help and information about refunding transactions

Reconciling the refund

You need to reconcile the donation refund as an 'income repayment'.

When the outgoing transaction for this appears on your match transactions screen within your Stripe account, you will need to:

  • select the transaction on the left-hand table,
  • click the + button to the right of the transaction,
  • select the 'income repayment' option and enter the transaction details.

Note: if you don't see this option, then you will need to first: (1) delete the stripe transaction you are trying to match as an income repayment then (2) manually re-add this transaction within your stripe account.

Gift Aid Adjustment

If Gift Aid has already been claimed on the original LoveGiving donation that you have refunded, don't forget to include an adjustment in your next Gift Aid claim (it doesn't have to be a LoveGiving Gift Aid claim, but you may wish to keep a note of the Gift Aid refund for your future reference.

If Gift Aid hasn't already been claimed on the donation, then you can just manually exclude the donation from your Gift Aid claim at the point of making the claim.

If the donation being refunded wasn't eligible to begin with, then you can skip this section.
